The Bellevue men’s tennis team won its seventh-straight title on Saturday at the 2025 NWAC Tennis Championships, hosted at Yakima Tennis Club. Overall, it is the 13th men’s tennis title for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs had a nearly flawless performance at the tournament, winning five of six singles brackets and all three doubles brackets. Tim Tao was named the NWAC Baden Men’s Tennis Player of the Year for going undefeated on the weekend, winning both the No. 1 singles and pairing with teammate Ryan Gavino for the No. 1 doubles title. Tao was celebrating his 19th birthday on Saturday. He had a tough matchup on Saturday to clinch the singles title, taking on Spokane’s John Guske. Both Tao and Guske won their matchups on Friday, so Saturday’s winner would be named the champion. After Guske won set one by a 6-4 score, Tao responded by winning the next two sets 6-3 and 6-1 to claim the title.
In doubles, Tao and Gavino won both matches on Saturday by matching 8-3 scores, defeating Treasure Valley’s Sam Swing and Kaden Giles and Spokane’s Guske and Christian Torres. Swing and Giles placed second as they defeated Guske and Torres on Friday in a very close match (9-8 (7-2)).
Gavino won the No. 2 singles by winning both matches on Friday. Swing took second for TVCC as he defeated Torres in a very close match with the final set going to tiebreaker: 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Bellevue’s Jake Murray won No. 4 singles. After Murray and Spokane’s Nico Becker each won on Friday, the two matched up on Saturday with Murray sweeping 6-3, 6-0.
No. 5 singles was decided on Friday as Bellevue’s Cole Fredericks won both matches. Spokane’s Tony Amaya took second as he defeated Treasure Valley’s Humberto Gonzales in comeback fashion on Saturday 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Bellevue’s Blake Gettmann claimed the No. 6 as he defeated Treasure Valley’s Joshua Ambrocio in a perfect match 6-0, 6-0.
Weller teamed with Aito Backus to win the No. 2 doubles with a couple of close matches. They defeated TVCC’s Jordan Groat and Artem Rozhko by an 8-4 score, followed by Spokane’s Saurombe and Becker 8-5. Groat and Rozhko took down Saurombe and Becker on Saturday by a 9-7 score to take second place.
Gettmann and Fredericks combined to win the No. 3 doubles with a perfect pair of matches, 8-0 sweeping both their opponents of Amaya and Wirth from Spokane and Gonzales and Ambrocio from TVCC. Amaya and Wirth took second with an 8-4 win against Gonzales and Ambrocio.
As a team, Bellevue finished with 141 points as they scored points in all nine brackets. Spokane finished second with 73 points as they earned one individual title and finished second in four other singles brackets and one doubles.
Bellevue head coach Micah Perron was named NWAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year as he has led the Bulldogs to four-straight titles since taking over the program.
